Following a good 15 years of low cost airlines operating services to Italy and indeed other parts of Europe, the airline industry has started to show signs of change over recent years. Today, it can be very confusing to work out the best company for your flight arrangements.
On the one hand, you have those airlines advertising flights for ridiculous prices to cities such as Rome, Florence and Venice. However, you need to bear in mind that these prices are rarely what they claim to be.
For a start, they are often single prices only: therefore, you automatically need to double them before you get an accurate idea of what the price of your flight will be. Further, these fares may not include applicable airport charges and taxes and these are always the most expensive aspect of any fare to Italy.
The low cost airlines will be ready and waiting to exploit you even further, once you go ahead and book your ticket with them: they will charge for everything from hold bags to getting on the plane 30 seconds earlier; in the future they will probably charge you for the air in the cabin.
Do not be so convinced by these low cost airlines any more. They are simply nothing like as cheap as they were about 10 years ago. Investigate all options on the companies that fly to your Italian destination and do not dismiss the more traditional airlines, as they are very likely to surprise you today.
